Mmmmm..! Childhood..! The most important part of our life and a special one. We all have infinite memories of our childhood, but out of all those, that one story always remains special, the one that for years and years remains locked in our hearts.
Talking about my treasured memory of childhood, I remember how I used to desperately wait for the summer vacations, just that time of the year which was solely meant to play and have fun and my vacations were more special because of my dearest chachu who would visit us every year from “The United States”. So, during that time, the most favourite weekend spot for us was the beach and mainly because it was hardly 30 minutes away. Probably my childhood weekend spot has made me a huge beach lover since then. Playing in the mud, sitting on camels and horses, making sand castles and floating my legs in the cold muddy water was the best summertime.
Back then, I was very fond of my chachu, maybe because he always got me so many gifts and chocolates. During our weekend spots, we used to often sit together gazing the beach and the sunset. Having never visited The United States, I would always with a hell of curiosity ask him the same question, “Chachu, how far is your home? How do we go there?” And I remember how tactically he used to fool me saying “Do you see the place where the water and the sky meet? Right there, is “The United States”, and once you walk for like 5 minutes, just towards the right side is my home.” And I would just jump with all that excitement, dreaming one day I will cross the beach and reach your home to surprise you. Chachu’s fooling game would always work on me..!
Today, almost 15 years later, while I am here, in “The United States”, seating across the beach, watching the sky and the sunset. I look up in the sky and still ask him the same question. But this time, it is “Chachu. how far is India? how far is my home?” And even from the sky, he shines and playfully fools me, saying “Do you see the place where the water and the sky meet? That’s the place where India is, and once you walk for 15 minutes, on the left is your home” And I smile at him in the sky, wondering how innocently he still makes me feel his presence and makes me believe in him one more time.
This incident is deeply rooted in my heart, and many such incidents make me realize how our elders would graciously make us believe in all their sweet lie’s. The lie’s that were innocent and have taught us some very important childhood lessons. The lessons, that in adulthood make us trace down the memory lane, back to the childhood, to the old golden days, to the lie’s, to the fooling games and to all the icy memories that have made a place deep within our heart.
P.S: Childhood Innocence and baked memories still remain the best. The beats of childhood still makes the heart thump a little more.
A bright sunny morning filled with love, laughter, smiles, happiness, colours and beautiful decor. It was one of those days, where everything seemed to be vibrant and colourful.
A girl in her mid 20’s dressed up in a beautiful yellow saree, adorned with a garland of marigold was all set for her marriage rituals. The big day of her life, the day which would change her life upside down. Her eyes sparkled as she smiled at everyone around her, though being excited about the grand evening, deep inside she seemed to be lost. Lost in her kingdom of thoughts, her worries were always covered with a twinkling smile on her curvy lips. She joyfully danced to the tunes of rituals and laughter with all her loved ones.
Her heart thumped faster when she finally was done with her morning ceremonies and was now about to get dressed up as “The Bride” for the grand evening. In between all the glittery blushers and lipsticks, her mind seemed to dig down the memory lane where she had been living throughout her life until now. Right from hanging on dad’s shoulder and learning to walk, from riding her first bicycle to driving her first car, from getting dressed in mom’s saree and now owning a one of her own, from kindergarten to college, everything seemed to be a flashback for her. From bed to closet, from address change to surname change, from getting up to mom’s pampering and then waking up to responsibilities she was anxious about all the dramatic changes of life.
And just then, someone uttered “Ohhh my God, you look so beautiful”, right at that moment from her past to her present, she wore a smile again. The bride-to-be started glowing and daydreaming about the new chapter of life. The chapter where she would be accompanied by someone day in and out, where every day would be a new start, where life would revolve around each other.
Dressed in the most graceful attire, she stood right in front of her parents. They could not take their eyes off from their not so little girl and the only thing they whispered with teary eyes was “Our little child, the wedding dress, the jewellery, the henna on your hand and the unstoppable smile on your lips makes you the most beautiful girl, a girl whom we love the most and we will continue loving you more and more”. Their words made her nerves weak and she hugged them like never before. Moments of happiness were now covered under a cloud of emotions, the emotions that were hard to express but were worth living for. And she realized, now that house would no longer be addressed as her house but would rather be addressed as “Her parent’s house” and while she took every step out of that place, the place where she entered as a kid and was leaving now as someone’s “wife to be” made her more nervous.
As she entered the beautiful venue decorated with a wreath of aromatic flowers, her nervousness flew away and her face was now covered with excitement and waves of smiles. While in her mind, she was sailing with high and low tides of emotions, she was very well aware of the present moment. The moment where even a drop of tear from her eye would be an end to everyone’s happiness and a grin on her lips would rejoice everyone’s face with sparkles of happiness. And to make the moment most special for everyone, all that she chose was to blow away her worries and to be as crazy as she could be.
From being a daughter to someone’s wife, she learned, she smiled, she cried and she made the most out of her most important day.
Turning back the pages of life, to a memory that brought us back from the demon’s eye and dropped us into God’s lap. I hardly remember an ounce of the incident, as I was just 2 years old. The only image that I can sketch is from my mom and dad’s eyes and their deeply rooted wounds.
Like every other family, mine was equally excited about the upcoming Diwali vacation. It was a trip to a holy destination, a well-known religious place of all Jains “Palitana”. And my sister had been more happy about it because it was my first holiday with everyone. A trip with the little one that gave them a special reason to cherish. But, none of us was aware of the forthcoming darkness that Diwali was about to bring.
Faces glued with delight and sparkles of the festive season, 5 of us: my dearest Nani, mom, dad, sister and tiny me, we started our awaited trip. Oh..I missed out the main person, our driver who supposedly was the lead of our journey, a journey which took a disastrous U-turn after 5 hours.
Till the time we had our lunch the journey had been a smooth one, waves of laughter were being shared and tiny me was being cuddled. Post lunch, everyone was about to doze off, tiny me was already asleep in my daddy’s lap seated on the front seat. And just before our lives revolved my dad placed me back seat, in my mom’s lap.
The clock ticked 3:00 pm, everyone was asleep and the lead person “Our Driver”, who wasn’t supposed to sleep, even he drowsed. Our car which was moving at a speed of 100, hit the tree roadside and the car shredded into 2 parts, the front glass crackled into pieces and damaged my dad’s entire face. My mom and Nani were hit by the front seats and everyone in the car was unconscious except my sister. Her bravery and smartness that day saved every one of us. She started screaming out “Help..! Help..!” as much as she could and by God’s grace, a passing car stopped by, for our help.
The generous person who stopped by was MLA of the district. He picked my sister out of the car and started looking out for everyone else in the car. When he looked at my father, he felt that he was no more and so he just dumped him in the trunk of his car. He hurriedly pulled everyone and rushed to the nearest hospital. Throughout the journey, he was worried about how many would survive the crash, along with my dad he had thought that even my mom or Nani’s life would end. Apart from everyone else in the car, the only lucky person to survive without any bruises was “ME”. The change from front seat to back seat was the fate that God had planned for me.
The days had been tough and the most dreadful ones. While my family member from our hometown reached the hospital which almost took them a day, we had seen Humanity taking a birth in that hospital. My dad, mom and Nani were a victim of major injuries and were under observation for the entire time. They were in a situation where it was hard to recognize them by their face or voice. And all the while when I and my sister were all alone, the natives of that little town took care of us. Not only did they handle us but they made sure my family had enough food and necessities to survive. By the time, my family reached we already had a little family who looked after us. By God’s grace and prayers chanted for my family, all of us survived the disaster and recovered within months.
Today when I hear this story for like nth time, my soul still trembles. What if I had been in the front seat? What if my sister too had been unconscious? What if the MLA would not have cared to stop? What if every one of us had been a victim of devil’s plan? What if God had not been kind to us? What if in the hospital no one had looked after me and my sister? And on and on, thoughts which might not be that meaningful to everyone but that’s what has made my family fall in love with our treasured life. Tear’s bowl down my eyes when I think of how grateful God had been to my family. The scars and wounds still appear fresh on my mom and dad’s face but the storm has made our belief in God and Humanity strong enough to love our life more and more.
Meet Avni and Aarush, the lovebirds who had been together for 5 long years. Madly in love with each other, their morning would start with their video calls and nights would end up again on their video calls. Be it Instagram, whatsapp, facebook, snapchat and what not, they were always connected to each other. The weirdos were so much into each other, that they actually had made their own 7 vows (they were a kind of saat janmo ke Saathi)
The VOWS (Which were strictly followed until one fine day)
Their life seemed to be pretty easy and following such vows made their relationship much stronger. But a relationship is never as smooth as it appears. Before meeting Avni, Aarush had been a chain smoker and it took a lot for Avni to get him rid off his smoking habit. Whenever in stress, Avni would hold his hand and pamper him like a 2-year-old baby. She knew the right way to get him off from his addiction, was to love him as much as she could. And with passing time, with Avni’s constant support Aarush was able to quit his smoking.
The hollow cracks started appearing when Aarush changed his job, the pressure of a new job dragged him into his old addiction – “The Dirty Smoke”. And the worst thing Aarush chose was to hide it from Avni, but as they say, a lie finds its own way to spill out. One fine day, Avni found a box of cigarettes in his car and she chose to confront him. Aarush with shame in his eyes told her the truth. Instead of getting angry, Avni had tears in her eyes, in a flash, she could sense the old Aarush( “The Chain Smoker”) taking rebirth. Aarush consoled her and once again promised her, that he would never do it again.
Avni’s overthinking power had a great impact, she could somehow sense that the pond was getting dirtier. And Aarush would always cover his broken promise saying everything is fine and that he has stopped smoking(The LIE). Aarush most of the times had been under stress, maybe because he had a chirpy boss and that the new workplace was a dirty one. But Avni would always lend her ears to all the chaos going inside Aarush. Avni at times was hurt since Aarush had started confining him into his own space and not letting Avni enter into it. Despite all the odd’s, she supported him until the second warning bell rang.
On one of their evening meet, Aarush pissed off of his work, started venting out all his anger on Avni and even blamed her for not allowing him to smoke. Avni was shocked to see Arush’s dramatic change. The words that he babbled had thumped her heart. Avni was broken and she realized the disaster had already begun. Heartbroken Avni left the place with tears in her eyes. The very next day Aarush called her up and apologized for his bad behaviour, Avni for one last time gave him a chance and asked him to stop it right away. Ever since his second mistake, Aarush had started hiding things a lot and some of the other way Avni would always discover the truth. As they say, Universe has the power to bring out the truth. Every time when Aarush got caught, he would get angry on Avni for spying him and would block her for like days on social media. Day by day, their relationship was falling apart and Avni could no longer get her Aarush back. With every broken promise, Aarush made Avni go a step away, he never did try to get her back instead gave her the pain which she could barely hold off.
It wasn’t just about the bad addiction but every time he did so, he disrespected Avni, and his rage made him do things which tore her apart. The third bell wasn’t just a warning it was a “Runaway” sign for Avni. Avni caught Aarush in a lounge, getting intimate with a girl. To this, he did not seem to be sorry but instead left the place with the other girl. And this was the time, Avni had to finally get out of the shit that Aarush had brought in. Aarush had started heading on a road that seemed to be a dark one. His sky was covered with smoke and ground was covered with ashes. There was no room for Avni in his life, she was shattered and disheartened.
Aarush and Avni, once madly in love were now miles apart. The tale of their love had ended with every broken promise.
P.S: It takes a moment to bind a relationship with a promise, but it takes lifelong to adhere to it. Think wise, before committing one.
11 am, 1st July
After the long conversation over the phone for the entire night, Rahul and Meera both seemed to be happy. While both were at their respective offices, they kept their eyes glued to the clock. For them, it was one of the longest days of their life. And the anxiety of meeting each other after 1 long year made them leave their offices early.
6:00 PM, Meera’s Home.
While looking at her wardrobe, Meera muttered
“Dam, I don’t have any charming stuff to wear, what shall I wear now? Pink? Blue? Black? ummmmm…. This is one of the toughest choices to make. Let me chuck off everything and just wear the black dress that Rahul had once gifted me.” And for a minute she was taken aback by the memory lane. Been 365 days ever since they broke up, but somehow she was still concerned about Rahul’s likes and dislikes. Within the next 15 minutes, Meera was ready and without any second thought, she chose to leave for her awaited evening.
6:00 PM, Rahul’s Home.
Unlike Meera, Rahul had his mind clear of what he was supposed to wear. Blue being Meera’s favourite, Rahul wore a blue shirt, black pant and left for the coffee-house. On his way, Rahul picked up a bouquet of roses, cake and some gifts. He had made some special plans for Meera’s birthday, there was a lot cooking in his mind and he very well knew how the evening had to be one of the special ones for both of them.
Rahul and Meera down the lane had the vibes of being together, but both were unsure of what the other one wanted. Today’s meet was very special for them as their fate was going to play a major role – Forever or Never Again..!!
7: 00 PM, The Coffee House.
Rahul reached a bit early since he wanted the arrangements to be perfect. He had booked the same table where they had met for the first time before 2 years. Just then Meera entered the cafe and their eyes met. Rahul was awestruck to see Meera in the dress which he had gifted her and he understood that Meera still had a soft corner for him. Meera was surprised to see the arrangements made by Rahul, the table was decorated with cake, flowers and gifts, Rahul hugged Meera and wished her happy birthday. Goosebumps cruised down Meera’s body, as, it had been a year now, that Rahul had been so close to her.
A sense of happiness and a sense of relief spread across their faces. Meera thanked Rahul for all the beautiful surprises and began to cut the cake.
Rahul: Meera, I must say, you are looking extremely gorgeous.
Meera(Blushed): Thanks, Rahul.
—— The silent moments —–
Rahul(breaking the silence): So Meera, been a year now, tell me how it was for you? And even before I hear your answer, let me tell you about myself, Meera it had been the toughest year of my life. I did realize my mistakes and I have since than longed for this day to meet you. Throughout the entire year, I kept on searching Meera in every other girl, I thought I could live without you, but trust me I was totally wrong. I thought love is a myth, but for me, it wasn’t. Every single day I craved for you, I just wanted to hold you tight and never let you fall apart.
While speaking his heart out, a tear rolled down Rahul’s cheek. Meera could not hold herself and she kept her hand on Rahul’s hand.
Meera: You know Rahul, I was so much habituated being around you. The moment we broke up my life paused, had I not just lost you, but I had majorly lost my confidence, my strength. While we were together life seemed to be pretty easy, you always lent me your ears, you were my solution to all the problems. Frankly, Rahul, I wasn’t even sure that we would ever meet again in life. I did try to contact you in between but for some reason, my heart stepped back. Every time I looked upon the sky, I felt (Meera stammered while she spoke) how how far we were, though we shared the same shelter, the sky, the stars and the clouds made me feel you were somewhere there watching me and calling me near you. There were several times when I dialled your number and even before the beep turned into ringer I cancelled the call.
In between, the waiter interrupted and they ordered their favourite Latte
Rahul: Meera it’s not that I did not try forgetting you, I did try my best to forget you and never look back, but that was my ego. My heart was stuck on the paths where we once walked. I realized how badly I needed you, I needed us. Against all the odds my heart still beats for you and only you.
Meera: Rahul even I tried thrashing the memories of the past and starting a new life. But I guess I was immature to understand what my soul wanted. I am sorry Rahul for having doubted your love in past. Maybe that was a test for us, where we did miserably fail but having given one chance I also badly want us to be together.
Rahul (Rahul kissed Meera’s hand): Meera, I am sorry for always misunderstanding you and crashing you down with my anger. I know I had not been supporting towards your life. Trust me, Meera I have changed now. For one last time and for forever I just want you.
Meera: Rahul, so do I want you, but what if we tumble again? Rahul, I can’t ever imagine someone else in your place. Through the entire year, I have been trying to make myself understand that there is a world beyond Rahul. And every time, when I made my mind firm to think so, I crashed. Rahul forgetting the past one year, I badly want our life to be one.
Rahul (with a grin): Meera before meeting you I wasn’t even sure if you wanted us to be together but now I feel I have got my life back, everything seems to be bright and clear. So, let’s just forget the past year, considering it was a test for us. Leaving behind the demons of past, all I want is a beautiful future for us. A future filled with love and understanding. Holding each other’s hand lets walk down the aisle of the journey called life.
Meera(smiled with tears of happiness): Rahul, so do I want us badly to be together forever. Rahul not everyone is as lucky as us, we have been given a chance to be together, so let’s not miss this chord.
Rahul holding a rose in his hand and the other hand on Meera’s hand asked her:
“Ms Meera Sehgal, for one last time can you please accept me? I promise to be your strength through your thick and thin, all I want is you beside me for forever. ”
Meera got up from her chair and embraced Rahul. She sobbed like a child and promised him that no matter what, she will never let them fall apart. I love you, Rahul.
Rahul(kissed her forehead): I love you Meera.
The following night had been a night of happiness, a night where their dreams finally turned to be real. And a knot for forever had been locked in their life.
P.S : Rahul and Meera were enough lucky to get a second chance, but not everyone is. If destiny makes you meet someone then never let that person go away, remember everyone meets for a reason.
Tie the knot of your relationship with love, respect, care and trust.
Kritika Sharma, a teenage girl with sharp dramatic eyes, innocent face, beautiful brown hair and a smile that never left her lips apart.
She was a kind of girl who would pop up in any random discussion, would easily gang up among a crowd of strangers and socialize with them as if she knew everyone since ages. For her being the star of the gang was as easy as getting a candy from an ice cream shop. A girl with complete entertainment and a comfort zone for every one around her.
Kritika had been in a relationship since 4 years and was crazily fond of Rohan. No matter how much they fought the end would be always a happy one. For everyone else, Kritika was a comfort zone but for Kritika her only comfort zone was Rohan. Since a year Rohan had shifted to States for pursuing his masters. And the long distance journey had turned out to be harsh on them, infinite fights, blames, doubts and much more. There had been a discussion going on between them for convincing Rohan’s parents for marriage. Rohan had not been able to convince his parents as Kritika belonged to other caste. Things had fallen apart, as there was a girl whom Rohan had been seeing up on his parents force. Kritika some where had got the negative vibes about Rohan leaving her.
One fine evening, Kritika was at her home, preparing for her final year exams and her phone rang. She was engrossed in her studies and thought of ignoring the call, but when she saw the screen flashing Rohan’s name, she picked it up in a second.
Rohan : Hi Kritika
Kritika (a pause) : Hi Ro..!!
Rohan : Kritika before you ask me anything and before we again begin to fight, I want to inform you some thing. Hello? Kritika ?? are you there??
Kritika (The word “INFORM” gave her an adrenaline rush) : Yea..Yeaah.. Ro…Rohan.. I am listening.
Rohan : Kritika I am sorry to bring up this news, but I can’t cheat over you. I got engaged last week. I am sorry I could not inform you earlier, it had been all of sudden and you know my parents just wanted me to get engaged with her. All I can say is I am sorry and All the Best Kritika.
Kritika without saying a word hung up the phone. She was shattered and dumbstruck. Every thing around her seemed blurry, she sobbed for hours and hours, she cursed herself for trusting Rohan blindly and waiting for him all through the years. She even failed her MBA finals.
Ever since Kritika and Rohan had fallen apart, she had changed. Her tricky eyes, her melodrama and playful tact’s no longer existed. For her being comfortable or trusting any guy was no longer on her to-do list. She would keep herself away from a mob and would not open up with anyone.
After few months, on extreme force of her best friend Ruhi, Kritika agreed to go up on a trip with Ruhi and her friends. Kritika had kind of made an agreement with Ruhi saying though she has agreed for a trip but Ruhi should not force for anything once they reach there. They were 8 of them, 3 boys and 5 girls. Kritika only knew Ruhi and everyone else no longer bothered for her. Others were quite friendly since they already had chitchats on the whatsapp group named “The TRIP”which Kritika had muted ever since the group was made.
It was a pleasant evening, they were in a resort on hill-side somewhere near Nasik. Kritika had been silent, reading a book as she was alone on a vacation. Her phone beeped with a quote from an unknown number.
The quote said “The real woman is whoever she wants to be”. Her eyes rose up and she smiled and immediately looked up for the number in true caller. It was a message from karan Mehra, the guy who was sitting right in front of her. It was some thing about the quote or the guy that had touched her heart and she replied “Thank you”. Seemed like in the entire 2 days of trip, Karan had been trying to understand her, though they never spoke with each other and nor did they chat on whatsapp. The trip got over and everyone returned back to the routine with a false promise of staying in contact.
Karan was curious to know Kritika, as if there was more about her which she hadn’t yet opened up. Karan thought of giving it a try, a try for a friendship and a try to know her more.
Karan : Hi Kritika. Its Karan here, Remember me?
Kritika (After 30 minutes): Hi Karan. I have your number. I do remember you.
Karan : Kritika I was just thinking if we can meet, only if you are comfortable with it.
Kritika : Well I don’t know what being comfortable is. But yes I can meet you for a coffee, I owe you one for the amazing quote you had shared.
Karan : Great. Will catch up Friday evening, 5:00 pm, Irish House. Thanks Kritika. Take Care
Kritika: Sure. Bye 🙂
The following night, Kritika thought about Karan. It had been 2 years, ever since she met any guy all alone. But this guy, Karan had some thing. Probably a comfort which she was looking for.
5:00 PM, Friday
Kritika and Karan exchanged a handshake and ordered a coffee. Karan tried his best to make her comfortable and he even made her smile a couple of times by sharing his funny experiences. Kritika was there in the coffee house for a specific reason, she wanted to know what made Karan send her the quote that day. She was amazed when he heard his reply.
Karan : Kritika, the quote is just for a woman like you. Firstly I am sorry, that I had been observing and trying to study your mind throughout the trip. I would just tell you one thing You are a powerful woman, you might have suffered a lot but don’t let the suffering take every thing from you. You can be a lot more than what you are now. Give your life a second chance.
Kritika had tears in her eyes as if some one had touched her soul, as if it was the perfect comfort that she needed and all that she missed was right here. Kritika was running out of words and she thanked Karan and left for home.
A day after, Kritika called Karan, and once again Karan made her laugh like no one else did. Slowly Kritika had again begun to trust. They met quite often, and in one of those meetings Kritika had narrated her side of the story. Karan who made sure the topic is never opened again. Kritika had found her comfort zone back, her playful tricks, her naughty smile and her love for her life was all on track.
So were they in love with each other?
No they weren’t in love, but they were in a relation stronger than love and it was “FRIENDSHIP”. They shared a bond of trust, comfort, truth and happiness.
Karan and Kritika had found a soul friend in each other.
P.S : Past might break you down, might tear you apart. But, don’t let a single person take down every thing from you. Learn to rise, learn to find the right one. It’s a small world, and there is a comfort zone for every one of us. Not every relation is about love some are above love.
